Alan was an instructor on Zone Chairs at Lions University in 2008.  He received a District Governor Award for micro enterprise mission trips to Kenya in 2007 and 2008.  He was recognized by his Club as a Melvin Jones Fellow in 2007.  He received the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation in 2009-2010 and the International Leadership Medal in 2010-2011.  Alan is a Certified Guiding Lion.

He is currently serving as the Certified Guiding Lion for a newly Chartered Douglas County Lions Club in Douglasville with 38 members.  He has attended two International Conventions and three USA/Canada Leadership forums.  He is the receiver of the Golden Chain award.

He is married to Lion Carole Leedy Bethel and they have three children and six grandchildren.

Director Anderson is a Doctor of Optometry and the owner of Anderson Eye Care.

A member of the Grand Rapids Lions Club since 1979, he has held many offices within the association, including club president, district governor and council chair. He also served as CSFII district coordinator, cchair of the 2007 USA/ Canada Forum Grand Rapids Host Committee, twice a member of the USA/Canada Forum planning committee and has participated in 22 Lions vision missions to Central and South America, and India.

In recognition of his service to the association, he has received numerous awards including the Henry Voet Grand Rapids Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lions of Michigan Foundation Humanitarian Award, the Grandville and Betty Cutler Leadership Award, the Lions of Michigan Foundation Ken Lautzenheiser Fellow Award, the S.A. Dodge MD-11 Distinguished Service Award, 10 International President’s Certificates of Appreciation, an International President’s Leadership Award and three International President’s Medals. He is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

In addition to his Lions activities, Director Anderson is active in numerous professional and community organizations, including the American Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association.

Director Anderson and his wife, Cheryl, also a Lion and a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, have one son and two daughters, all of whom are Lions and whose spouses are Lions. They have one grandson. Director Anderson’s brother and father are also Lions.

As part of a successful pilot program last year, Lions and LCIF, with a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and support from local ministries of health and other Measles Initiative partners, provided immunizations for more than 41 million children in Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mali and Nigeria.  And now, as our efforts expand, Lions have the opportunity to help children in all countries where measles remains a heavy public health burden.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is once again partnering with Lions in the fight against measles. The Gates Foundation is challenging Lions to mobilize US$10 million. To help Lions in this effort, the Gates Foundation is donating US$1 for every $2 raised by Lions. This is a total matching contribution of US$5 million, the largest single donation in LCIF’s history! Together, LCIF and the Gates Foundation will provide a total of US$15 million to fight measles this year.
